Pirelli vs. Michelin – A tire test on a Swiss mountainpass

After we’ve been on the road with our Jaguar F-Type SVR for a little more than a year with the Pirelli P Zero, it was time to get new tires and do a direct comparison of Pirelli vs. Michelin. The best place for it? A mountain pass with a lot of drama: tight corners, tunnels, partly wet roads, snow, rocks, lakes, streams, meadows and waterfalls. Pictures & Rights @ David Hubacher

Assembly at Emil Frey Altstetten

Before we got started, it was time to assemble the new Michelin tires. The team of Emil Frey Altstetten was as always very friendly, courteous and competent. After a short coffee break the car was perfectly cleaned and delivered ready for the summer.

Pirelli vs. Michelin – our trip over the Susten pass

Between Gadmen and Wassen you will find an impressive natural spectacle in Switzerland. This early morning the Sustenpass showed its most beautiful side – after a few bends we emerged through a sea of fog into a paradise that has no equal. The Sustenpass is a magical place and is definitely one of the most beautiful pass roads in the world. The P Zero from Pirelli unfortunately only survived a season- with the new summer tires from Michelin a good time for a direct comparison Pirelli vs. Michelin.

1. The braking distance

Safety first, so we took a look at the braking behaviour and the braking distance. The Pilot Sport 4S gets better marks – it is also noticeable on the road, where the tire keeps its promise. The Pilot Sport from Michelin is also very reliable in the wet.

2. Handling & driving behaviour

As a non-racing driver this point is quite difficult to judge. It is also understandable that a new tire has more grip than one that has already covered a few thousand kilometres. The Pilot Sport 4S from Michelin feels great on the pass road and kept us in the track at all times. Our F-Type distributes about 75% of the power to the rear axle, which makes for much more driving pleasure but also brings its risks. But with its sophisticated traction control and the new tires we had a perfect ride over the pass.

3. Endurance / mileage

If you compare Pirelli vs. Michelin, the mileage is clearly Michelin’s USP. 27’000 KM is more than an entire season for a sports car – so the Pilot Sport 4S lasts much longer.

4. Price

If you search for a comparison Pirelli vs. Michelin on reifendirekt.ch, the Pirelli P Zero is slightly cheaper. But if you consider the durability and the safety advantage, the Michelin tire makes more sense. With these outfits you can’t go wrong when it comes to summer fashion 2019. The looks are ideal for a leisurely stroll along the shore, a sailboat trip or a glass of rosé on the water. The combination of blue and white fits so wonderfully into the theme of yachting and is definitely one of our favourites.

What is the Goodwood Festival of Speed?

The Goodwood FOS is a somewhat unusual motorsport event and in this sense the biggest of its kind. While several drivers are doing a hill climb, the car manufacturers are showing their latest models. Besides, there is everything that makes a man’s heart beat faster: Smoke, tyres, petrol, cold beer and everything else that motorsport has to offer.

The trip to London

Our flight went to London in the afternoon, then with the driver further to Chichester. The anticipation was huge and the atmosphere could not have been better: past Georgian houses, tidy gardens and endless golf courses – we had definitely arrived in England!

Our journey with the renowned tyre manufacturer Michelin

If it comes to racing, nothing works without petrol, oil and tyres. The fact that the Goodwood FOS only offers the best, is underlined by the renowned tyre manufacturer Michelin. The company has an impressive history of motorsport experience and looks back on many years of innovation and racing. The company stands for a tireless quest for quality that constantly pushes the boundaries of vehicle and driver performance.

At the Goodwood FOS booth there were all kinds of innovations to see and experience: Race simulator, painting artists and the unique Koenigsegg Jesko.

4 Reasons to visit the Goodwood FOS

1. Petrol, smoke and tyres

The main event is a not to be taken too seriously race, which goes from the track in front of the Goodwood House over a rally track in the forest up the hill. All the supercars and vintage cars are chasing up the hill, while drifting shows are shown. Visitors can also enter the paddock throughout the event to view the vehicles and talk to the drivers.

2. Fast cars

Where do we start? Goodwood FOS has it all! Starting with Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Jaguar up to exotic brands like Koenigsegg, Pagani or even an Apollo IE (approx. 2,6 Mio EUR). Meanwhile, you can often also find fully electric supercars.

3. Classy vintage cars

The smell of oil, petrol and the pure mechanics without any bells and whistles makes a classic car an experience. One thing is for sure: the Goodwood FOS even makes 007 jealous, it has classic cars as far as the eye can see.

4. There is a lot to experience at the Festival of Speed

If you want more than just to watch, you can experience a lot:

  • Enjoy a circuit with a Jaguar F-Type as co-driver
  • Fly with the helicopter over the terrain
  • SUV course with Land Rover
  • Ferris wheel
  • Delicious food at various stands
  • …or you can play one of the amazng golf courses after the event.

We’ll be back at the FOS!

It was a great event and top organized in every respect – a must-do for every fan of motorsport. From our point of view it is a far more great experience than a boring fair in stuffy, dark and crowded halls. Many thanks at this point to Michelin for the invitation and this great experience!
