What is 5G?
What is almost everyday in the Chinese cities is now expanding in Europe: a new mobile communications standard called «5G». Simply explained, it is the successor of 3G and 4G, so you benefit from faster Internet. In addition, 5G allows users with the Huawei 5G smartphone to download movies in a few seconds or stream games and videos in 4K or 8K resolution. In short, these are some of the advantages:
- Faster response times
- Increased capacity (up to 1 million devices per square kilometre can log into the mobile network)
- Download speeds of up to 2 Gbit per second
- Equipped for the age of AI
If you take a closer look at 5G, it should bring further advantages in the near future – especially with a focus on the progress of AI – as these require higher bandwidths:
- Self-driving cars
- Virtual reality
- Augmented reality
- Home connect
- Control of drones or robots in factories
Review of the new Huawei 5G smartphone
With the P20 Pro & Mate 20 Pro we had partly up to 1 1/2 days battery. 5G obviously needs a bit more power, which should be the reason that the battery of the Mate 20 X 5G lasts about 1 day (compared to the competitors, this is still a top runtime). The Huawei 5G smartphone is charged within a few minutes thanks to super charging. is now available on the market and offers the possibility to use the 5G mobile standard. We have been testing it for two weeks.
The design
The design has been practically taken over 1:1 from the Huawei Mate 20 pro – with the exception that the Mate 20 X 5G contains a huge 7.2 inch OLED display. So you can casually watch your favourite Netflix series on the go – thanks to 5G without unwanted interruptions.
Usability
Thanks to a lightning-fast processor, no second is waited here. The size of the Mate 20 X 5G takes a bit time to get used to, certainly within two weeks it feels totally normal.
Sharp images thanks Leica’s 40 megapixel camera
The 40 MP camera was developed by Leica and also features an 8 MP telephoto lens and a 20 MP wide-angle lens. This makes the Huawei 5G smartphone camera perfect for landscape, group and macro photography. The night mode is also impressive, allowing great pictures to be taken even later in the evening. A few examples can be found in our Hong Kong report.
What about the battery?
The battery of the P20 Pro & Mate 20 was pretty amazing, it lastet about 1 1/2 days. 5G obviously needs a bit more power, which should be the reason that the battery of the Mate 20 X 5G lasts about 1 day (compared to the competitors, this is still a top runtime). The Huawei 5G smartphone is charged within a few minutes thanks to super charging.
What is the price difference?
Digitec offers the Huawei 5G smartphone for CHF 999.00. With Sunrise, the 5G subscription costs CHF 10.00 more per month.
Conclusion 5G / Huawei Mate 20 X 5G
We continue to develop and the technological progress of recent years is immense. The topic of AI will be continuously improved and now also supports medical areas. Such a technology requires the mobile standard 5G. It is certainly also important that we look at topics such as radiation and health risks, analyse and evaluate them and, if necessary, define the best possible actions.
The 5G phone from Huawei is technically very successful and convinces with a great camera, solid battery, integrated AI and thanks to 5G super fast Internet.
