Black Tie: The Rules To Follow

black tie example

We explained a few dress codes, but now we will talk about an important one: the dress code black tie. There are of course, a few rules to follow when it comes to dress up in the most perfect way.

Black tie is usually written on invites for very chic and sophisticated events like: opera, red carpet, weddings or similar.

What Does Black Tie Mean

It’s definitely the most formal dress code someone can ask for. So there are a few hard-coded rules to follow. A man simply has two options here: smoking or a very elegant suit.

Obviously your first choice of the colour is: black.

Smoking Rules

  • Never combine it with a tie, always use a black bow-tie
  • Use a white made to measure shirt
  • Select some classy & matching cufflinks
  • Use black socks and black shoes
  • Knee socks is what you have to look for
  • A waistcoat makes the whole look very dapper

Suit Rules

  • Consider getting a made to measure suit
  • If not possible there are a few brands that provide ‘super black’ suits – like HUGO BOSS.
  • Ask your tailor to adjust your suit, slim fit is preferred
  • Combine it with a made to measure shirt
  • And cufflinks
  • Black knee socks and black shoes is a must

Black Tie – Gentleman Rules

Such a dress code is more than just suiting up. It expects you to behave like a gentleman. So here are a few things that absolutely make you James Bond.

Behaviour

  1. Everyone else first, you’re going after
  2. Open doors, free the seat, ask what your fellows need
  3. Be humble and friendly
  4. Listen before you speak
  5. Smile and enjoy

Your Appearance

  1. Cut your nails, trim your beard
  2. Clean and polish your shoes
  3. Get a Swiss manufactured watch
  4. Dry-clean your suit
  5. Close the upper button when walking or standing

Body Language

  1. Watch your body language, straighten your chest
  2. A solid handshake is a sign of confidence
  3. Keep eye-contact

Men’s Care

  1. Use a nice fragrance (it should say perfume on it, NOT aftershave)
  2. A mint is a better alternate than chewing gums
  3. Body- and hand cream softens your skin
  4. Beard oil smells and looks nice

Alright, I think that should do the job. If you have more ideas, get in touch with us, we’re happy to learn!
