Cape Town’s Grain Silo – The Silo Hotel

The Silo Hotel in Cape Town

Design, history, taste, art, and luxury in The Silo Hotel. It captures the past and future of Africa and stands for what Cape Town was, is and will be. Cape Town is famous for commerce, the harbour, and agriculture. The Silo acts as an anchor to agriculture, shipping industry, and trade. Time rendered its function obsolete and useless.

Thomas Heatherwick redesigned the old grain silo building which houses The Silo Hotel and a contemporary art museum. After the grain and shipping industry changed and started using containers, the grain silo remained unused for two decades. In the last few years, the V&A Waterfront mandated Heatherwick Studio to provide new breath into this historic building.

Even though the idea of the museum for Africa’s contemporary art (Zeitz MOCAA museum opens in September) deserves praise, The Silo Hotel stands as a master piece separate from it. The building stands in the middle of the sunset and sunrise, merges vessels and industry with the iconic landscape of Cape Town, fuses existing concrete and steel with classic interior design, and combines proven service with highest existing technological and beauty standards. The history, geography, art and architecture cause excitement in every guest in love with unexpected environments and in search of inspiring places. The Silo is a climax of Cape Town.

The Silo Hotel’s Interior

The Hotel ticks all the boxes of what you expect for stars: bar, restaurant, spa, fitness, and service. Beyond the boxes, the hotel benefits from the genius of its designer and the character of the building. Concrete and gold embrace you in the foyer. The entrance combines industry chic with classic manufacturing of the interior. The lamps, fauteuil, furniture reflect high manufacturing capacity and understanding of details.

The fitness centre and spa convinces with modern interior and high quality treatment. On the fourth floor the hotel entertains a state of the art fitness centre and spa. It should not hinder you from running outside in the waterfront.

The restaurant and bar offer all drinks you demand and a large selection of wine. On the sixth floor, the hotel contains the reception desk, restaurant, and bar. Guests feel the skeleton of the silo, in form of the old, steel, or space.

Rooms above Cape Town depending on the taste, sunset or sunrise, or even both. The seventh to tenth floors provide different kinds of hotel rooms. All of the rooms are decorated in contemporary African art. Some suites are two floors or/and several rooms. On top, the Silo offers a penthouse. Here, guests experience sunset and sunrise as well as a magnificent view spanning from Table Mountain across to the harbour. The view is above everything you know of Cape Town. You savour the most beautiful place on earth at the best spot possible. The view is massive, unique, and the interior elegant.

The eleventh floor has a boutique bar plus grill, and plenty of space for guests as well as an infinity pool, a recreation area, plus a 360° view from the top where you may sip your Chardonnay of the most decorate South African vineyard Bon Courage whenever you like. The number is limited. Hotel guests have priority.

Zeitz MOCAA and The Silo

You want to be there in September. Then, Cape Town opens the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in this building. It is described as the leading collection of contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora. However, The Silo provides little information of what a Silo guest may expect from this event or the museum. This museum fills an important gap in contemporary art. If you want to plan this trip, contact The Silo Hotel directly.

Hotel Krone Regensberg – The History

The little town was established in 1248 by Baron Lüthold V of Regensberg, who ruled a large part of what is now the Canton of Zurich at that time.

In the foothills of the Jura, 200 metres above the lowlands, the little town was considered a natural fortress and had the advantage of being located near the trading route. Moreover, there was enough limestone to construct a town. Lüthold built himself a castle with a moat, a drawbridge and an entrance that was almost five metres above the ground. The distinctive “Bergfrid”, a 21-metre-high, round tower with walls that are an average of three metres thick, was constructed at the same time as the castle. The tower was habitable, with a kitchen and hot-air heating.

When the Feud of Regensberg broke out in 1267, the Habsburgs, supported by troops from Zurich, declared war on the town. Subsequently, in 1302, Lüthold VIII, the founder’s great-grandson, sold Regensberg to the Habsburgs. Finally, in 1409, the Habsburg Duke Frederick “of the Empty Pockets” mortgaged the town to the City of Zurich.

In 1540, a great fire destroyed the “Oberburg” – the upper part of the town, and only the castle and the “Bergfrid” were spared, thanks to a deep moat. In just one year, however, the Oberburg was rebuilt.

The Krone was already entitled to run a tavern before the great fire of 9 September 1540, which broke out at the “Journeymen’s House,” where the flames spread at a rapid pace. As there was too little water available, the bailiff attempted to douse the fire with wine. From the Middle Ages to the present day, there has been a succession of landlords, and many guests have enjoyed their hospitality. The district court and a prison were housed in the building until 1870. History reports that, in those days, the innkeeper would frequently pass the time by fetching prisoners from their cells in order to play cards or drink a glass of wine with them. In 1955, Willi Günthart of Regensberg acquired the Krone from the Zwinggi family, who were already considering expansion plans at that time.

Until the 1970s, only the section above the gatehouse had been developed to accommodate guests. The rest of the building was renovated in 1972. The Krone was finally closed as a guesthouse in 1997. After the disastrous fire of 12 September 2011 – almost exactly 471 years to the day after the fire of the Middle Ages – the Krone reopened its doors on 3 June 2015. After more than four years of building and renovation, this uniquely beautiful edifice has now been restored to its former glory.

With much dedication and passion, the Schäfer family has succeeded in reviving the building as the Hotel Restaurant Krone.

6 Reasons Why You Should Travel Marrakech

Travel Marrakech – Introduction

This autumn, we made a trip to Marrakech – a city that is like a fairy tale of 1001 night, probably few other oriental cities can compete in beauty with her. But let me tell you why you should travel to Marrakech.

marrakesh-night

le-jardin-koutoubia

1. Marrakech – A certain mystery and hidden secret

The Berbers called her ‘The Land Of God’, or it is also well-known as ‘red city’ or ‘pearl of the south’.

Marrakech is a spirited city surrounded by natural beauty. At its heart, it is busy with culture and old architecture, endless souks, and relaxing hammams. Just outside of its borders lies the Sahara Desert and the Atlas Mountains.

Marrakech grew rapidly and established itself as a cultural, religious, and trading centre for the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa; Jemaa el-Fnaa is the busiest square in Africa.

It’s been a while, I travelled to Marrakech- but still, there was something I clearly remembered. There is a certain myth, sort of ‘all-embracing energy’ in this town. During my trip I’ve captured a few shots, reflecting the infinite beauty of this town.

2. Souks in Marrakech

Trade and crafts are extremely important to the local economy. There are 18 souks in Marrakech, employing over 40,000 people in pottery, copper-ware, leather and other crafts. The souks contain a massive range of items and it’s just an unbelievable experience and a must-do for every traveller.

I bought tons of spices and a few scarfs made of ‘sabra silk’ – Sabra is a luxurious fabric and a natural fibre made from the Agave Cactus, grown in Morocco. The fabric is made by hand using techniques passed down through the centuries.

3. Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi

A fantastic hotel, which is a 15-minute walk from the historic heart of Marrakech and just a 4 km drive from Marrakech Menara Airport.

Moroccan architectural details and orange tree gardens complement leisure facilities such as a spa, gym, kids club, swimming pools and children’s pool. Seven dining and entertainment venues includes a signature Moroccan restaurant.

A dedicated entrance connects the hotel to Morocco’s largest convention centre, the renowned Palais des Congrès, which is also operated by Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

A few other good reasons to choose the Mövenpick Mansour Eddahbi

  • The Hotel comes up with large rooms and king size bed’s to fully enjoy your trip
  • Plenty of large pools are available
  • The Spa & Hammam ensure you can fully relax during your trip
  • The staff is extraordinary friendly and attentive
  • It smells like ‘Fleur D’Oranger’ everywhere – that’s just a dream
  • It’s lighting concept is a big eye-catcher

4. Moroccan Cuisine & Spices

You don’t need to be an expert to find something magical in Marrakech. It’s a city primed to amaze the senses – each aspect, smell, sound, and taste you encounter is more inspiring than the last. Let your taste senses start the exploring by cooking and sampling the utterly unique cuisine of Morocco.

Moroccan food is an adventure on your table, it’s a different way of eating with different flavor combinations, including sweet and savory spices. It’s so different than any other food you’ll experience in the Mediterranean. Traditionally, everything is shared from the same pot, and there are no individual plates. Food means a lot more than just something you put into your body to get you through the day. It’s a part of life, and it brings people together.

Vegetables, spices, and meats aren’t cooked separately—everything is cooked together to extract as much flavor as possible. It’s all about the variety of flavors, to experience a maximum joy of eating – it’s love, it’s art.

5. Discover The Sahara

The Sahara is just a few kilometers from Marrakech. To me, the Sahara seems like an infinite universe which hides all of earth’s secrets. A place where you can find silence and harmony. There are a few amazing camps to spend your night and let everything go. Check it out here

The dunes are changed by the wind, but the desert never changes. – Paulo Coelho ‘The Alchemist’

6. Craftsmanship in Marrakech

Still, some residents are practicing craftsmanship to it’s perfection. Looking for huge mirrors, fancy lamps or colonial furniture? Marrakech is your place.

I had a wonderful time with amazing people. I can’t wait to come back to this astonishing city.

Bergland Hotel Sölden

Bergland Hotel Sölden

On a sunny Friday morning, we packed our stuff into the Range Rover Sport and drove up to Sölden. The Bergland Hotel is nestled directly in the town of Sölden. You can park your car in front of the building, whilst the staff arranges your luggage and shows you the beautiful room.

Since the movie ‚Spectre‘ was filmed in Sölden, the town is pretty proud to be part of the whole Bond-Mania. Of course, the Bergland Hotel has also quite a lot of Bond posters which gives it a nice ambiance. After a busy day, you enjoy relaxing at the spa or having a wonderful and delicious dinner in their restaurant. The rooms are comfortable, yet roomy and really cosy.

Sölden is located close to the Italian border in the beautiful 65km long Öztal valley, in Tyrol, Austria.  Beautiful Sölden and its magnificent scenery make the perfect hideaway to let your body, mind and soul relax. Besides relaxing, Öztal offers a broad choice of summer as well as winter activities you can perform, such as hiking, climbing, biking, skiing, glacier skiing, and much more.

Bergland Hotel Spa

As Spa lovers we highly appreciated the outright and diverse spa area with its finnish sauna overlooking the Öztal valley. Once a day you get to enjoy a slackening scented sauna infusion by the experienced sauna master including peeling and useful advice on ‘how to sauna’.

We felt in very close touch with nature lying on the comfortable hay beds, looking over the beautiful valley and scenting the freshly cut hay that fulfills the spacious and private relaxation chambre. Pure bliss unlike anywhere compareable!

ICE Q Sölden

The world famous ICE Q Restaurant is located 3,048 metres above sea level. Surrounded by over 250 superb three-thousand metre mountains. Where innovative architecture meets futuristic design, is the place where sophisticated gourmet delights combine with fine wines and dreamy panoramic views to create one exceptional symbiosis. The ICE Q contains a panorama terrace where you get to experience what is unique.

Formula 1 Night Race With Singapore Airlines

My Journey With Singapore Airlines

Traveling is definitely one of my big passions. My whole life, I’ve been flying to the most beautiful spots on earth, because life is a wonderful path of adventures. Most of the time, I considered flying as a necessary instrument to bring you from A to B in the cheapest way possible. But let me tell you, flying Business Class with Singapore Airlines doesn’t feel like flying anymore, it’s far beyond that. I’ve traveled 30 countries now, but the flights to Singapore were the best two I had in my life, literally.

From the very moment you’re entering the airport, until you arrive at your preferred destination, it’s a totally different adventure. One of many outstanding facts, is the extraordinary service you’re experiencing when flying with Singapore Airlines. The cabin crew provides a lovely and terrific service to their customers.

The seats are the widest you can get in a business class booking, and with a height of 1,93 I had no issues sleeping like a baby – completely stretched. The food is fantastic, you’re being served with haute cuisine beef tenderloin. You can imagine, the flight of over 10 hours felt like heaven on a plane and unfortunately, it was over very quickly.

Remember waiting bored at the airport on an uncomfortable seat? Not happening when flying business class with SIA. You get the access to stay in their lounge with a delicious meal and a comfy seat.

Singapore Formula 1 Night Race

The F1 Night race is probably the most spectacular race during the year. On such a race week-end the city turns into a big Formula 1 party. On our way from the airport to the Grand Hyatt Hotel, I already saw Singapore’s skyline and the lights of the track.

Later in the evening – even from far – you hear the first warm-up of the cars, which makes you excited to attend the race. Thousands of people are coming to see their favourite teams and drivers to corner around the racetrack. Rosberg was leading the run, skipped a pit stop at the very end to save some time, which allowed Ricciardo to get closer. A lap more and the race would have ended differently. It was very exciting and it’s the reason I love sports so much!

There is everything you need: comfort, space, a fantastic service, a large pool and brilliant spa treatments. A Hotel with the highest possible standards. I almost didn’t trust my eyes, the Deluxe Room is almost as big as my flat!

After three days of action, it was time to get a ‘Damai Spa Treatment’. The one-hour massage was superb, relaxation to the fullest.

Red Bull Alpenbrevet 2016

Red Bull Alpenbrevet 2016 – Our Experience

Friedrich Nietzsche ones said:

In every real man a child is hidden that wants to play.

red-bull-alpenbrevet

redbull-alpenbrevet

Nietzsche’s quote is not more than the truth. I think it’s one of the most important facts of a man’s life. Never lose your child, never forget your humor and never stop playing tricks. We all grow older and we’re probably also getting a bit more serious. At the end of the day it’s those events we tell our kids about. Those when we were free, without doubt and sorrows. When we were boys.

With Jonny Walker

Red Bull Alpenbrevet is exactly the type of event where your hidden child is allowed to play the whole week-end. It literally belongs to the best days in my life and I am more than glad I could spend them with my beloved brother.

The aim was, to drive 120km over 3 mountain passes with a moped, disguised as crazy as possible. We decided to show up in a top gun dress. That sounds pretty insane, no… it is insane. The whole race started on a sunny Saturday morning in Lugano. The weather was just perfect and people were all in a fantastic mood. Mopeds arrived from everywhere and people started to prepare their Red Bull race. They have investigated weeks and months just to participate this event.

After a furious start of the race we completed the first mountain pass which was also the most difficult one. Half of it was hard pedaling work, pretty tough!

The whole route took us 8 hours to complete. At the end we were pretty exhausted but that was worth it! Thanks to Red Bull and Elena for organising everything – we’ll be back next year for sure!

Hotel Paradies – A Relaxing Hideaway

Hotel Paradies – Our Journey

For the first time in our lives we drove a vintage Ford Mustang to spend a week-end in Graubünden. The sun was out and we started our trip towards ‘Engadin’ in the late afternoon. A perfect day to ride convertible in a relaxed mood towards our destination – ‘Hotel Paradies’.

It requires some patience until you arrive at a place called ‘Ftan’, a hidden village very close to the border to Austria. The Hotel is wonderfully nestled in a terrific and quiet rural environment. It’s surrounded by mighty mountains and deep canyons where the water shines in a very unique way. On the way there, we came past plenty of tiny, sweet villages with a typical ancient Swiss architecture.

Hotel Paradies – About The Place

The Hotel comes up with a warm and charming atmosphere. The fireplace in combination with the antique furniture turns it into an even cosier venue. During spring and summer you can spend your time outside on the sun terrace – ideal to smoke a cigar and enjoy the peaceful time. Our Hotel suite was huge, almost bigger than my flat. The free-standing bathtub, a rain shower plus the private garden and terrace make you feel like queen and king. The spa is up on the rooftop with loads of space – sauna and steam bath get nicely prepared whenever you like to use it.

Hotel Paradies – The Food

Impossible to not talk about the outstanding, paradise-like food we had. It was extraordinary delicious. The ingredients for every single course get carefully selected from regional and organic food – astonishing. Each plate is manually prepared and marvellously decorated. The meat is from animals that had plenty of space and healthy food. The chef told me that he often selects them by himself. We were very happy with the huge wine selection – especially local ones from ‘Bündner Herrschaft’ – I had to take a case home.

Jaguar F-Pace Introduction

For the first time in Jaguar’s history, the brand has recently presented their new SUV. The F-Pace might arrive a decade later than it’s competitors – but frankly, who cares – SUV’s are still a massive trend all over Europe.

The front remembers of the other Jaguar models, it’s the look of an angry cat with its wide and sharp expression. As the model just came out, some people are seeing it for the first now that I am driving it and the reactions are immensely good! Jaguar designers should be celebrated for their curation of the F-Pace’s details!

Jaguar calls the F-Pace ‘a performance cross-over for people who love driving’ – and they’re absolutely right. I love to drive this car and every time I start the engine there is an excitement coming up. The new model competes directly with the Porsche Cayenne, Porsche Macan and of course the BMW X3. You can trust me when I tell you – it does it very well.

Jaguar SUV

Jaguar F-Pace

The Jaguar F-Pace First Edition

I’m currently driving the most powerful diesel version of the Jaguar F-Pace. It’s a turbo charged 3.0 litre Diesel producing 300bhp and 700Nm torque!

Aluminum construction creates a rigid structure; sharp steering and fantastic body control – that ends up in much driving confidence. The interior is roomy and plenty of space is available for ski week-ends, or journeys of big families – no problem!

There is a huge list of features which are simply amazing and I’d like to mention them:

  • The huge panoramic roof brings a lot of light into the car, it can be opened any time
  • Extra large 22′ wheels? Come on, a cheeky and masculine detail of the F-Pace!
  • The touch screen got bigger, it’s easy to use and there is so much to configure
  • Ambiance light glows in the night and whilst driving through tunnels – a very luxury and fine made detail

Jaguar F-Pace – Interior

The F-Pace’s interior is tactile and attractive. It looks and feels classy in a way only Jaguars does. Therefore it is far more special to sit in than a BMW X4 or Porsche Macan. What’s more, it’s easy to use. The satnav is just fantastic and works like a Swiss movement.  F-Pace has an extensive range of handpicked leathers and sophisticated finishes. These premium materials give F-Pace one of the most comprehensive interior choice in its class. This is your perfect opportunity to create a space that reflects your individual style.

A Gentleman’s closing words

We have spent a truly wonderful and relaxing week-end at Villa Honegg. On the road with the Jaguar F-Pace, one of the best SUV’s I drove so far. Thanks to the lovely team at Villa Honegg, we were treated in a typical Swiss way – the customer is king. The nobel-prize-worthy producers of the Jaguar F-Pace have done their job in the best possible way! What would a gentleman want more than such a perfect week-end?

Why Australia?

Discovering Australia should absolutely be on every bucket list.
The country comes up with so much diversity…
Never ending roads, dry desert, wild animals, infinite coasts and astonishing beaches.

It feels like the country has so many secrets but won’t tell you all of them – even if you spend your whole life there. There is sort of a mystery, a sublime energy hidden in every rock and every drop of water.

Some things we will never forget

    • To all the lovely / wonderful people we met and visited: thank you for hosting us and for making our stay absolutely phenomenal! during the whole time we were in great company and we had a fantastic time down under!

Due to a friends recommendation we have booked one of the biggest adventures I have done so far. In the middle of deep forrest pretty far away from civilization there is the ‘Wollemi Wilderness Treehouse Resort’

Yes, you’re reading right. A hidden place – about an hour ride to the next grocery story in the middle of the jungle. Some crazy guys have built very comfortable tree houses. You’re just alone there, without any mobile connection, tv and all those kind of things. So you turn into Adam and Eva, naked and in peace. Back to the roots so to say. We have experienced a lot of peace and harmony there.

Along the coast of Australia

Traveling up the Coast from Sydney to Brisbane was a unique experience. As this is a very popular route, we first weren’t sure whether to do it since we don’t like to do things too mainstream. To our favor, the popularity of this route brings the advantage that you have a wide range of beautiful destinations to stay at and of things to do.

After leaving Sydney we discovered the biggest moving sand dunes of the southern hemisphere – well who would have thought, not in Africa but in Port Stephens, 200km north of Sydney. These dunes are not very well known by overseas tourists yet and seem quite untouched. It was therefore an even more special experience to ride them by quad bikes with a very small group and no other people around.

Often it’s the unexpected that characterizes a journey. Whilst Heading further up the coast on the pacific highway, sometimes you take a bend and from one second to another you get spoiled with an astonishing view over the ocean or over the infinite bush land. We kept coming across dozens of marvelous secret beaches.

Byron Bay

The creative and ‚back-to-the-roots’ lifestyle in Byron Bay, a trendy growing town in northern New South Wales, straight away caught us. As soon as we arrived we felt very welcomed in Byron and we were surprised by the divine bungalows, restaurants and cafés went to. Creativity really seems to be born there

Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island belongs to the Great Barrier Reef and comes up with deep sky blue water that shines like diamonds combined with beaches that are past all belief.

We loved the Qualia Resort with it’s infinity pool.

The island has a few really cool sports to do like kayaking or wakeboarding.

Travelling is one of the most precious things in the world. Pretty much nothing else in this world teaches you more than travelling.

And that’s exactly why you shouldn’t wait. Do it. Travel often and mother earth will show you all its beautiful sides.

Kameha Zürich Smoker’s Lounge – By Beat Mumenthaler

Kameha Zürich Smoker’s Lounge

The Kameha Grand Zürich is definitely one of my favourite Hotels in Zürich and comes up with an amazing smoker’s lounge. Of course there is a huge variety of drinks to order at the bar.

Now that we made such amazing shots, I have decided to combine them with a few Gentleman’s quotes I absolutely love.
Thanks a lot to Beat Mumenthaler for the brilliant work.

It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
