5 Reasons Why Cigars And Whisky Are Such A Harmony

1. The Meditation Aspect

Some of you might be thinking: Am I reading right? Yes, you are. And it’s actually the most important fact about the ceremony of smoking a cigar and pair it with a good whisky. It’s called being conscious. We’re often stressed out, because life brings a lot of responsibility and challenges.

But there is this very moment… When you sit down relaxed and you light up your cigar, the barman brings your desired Balvenie whisky and you know: My day is done, I can let go now – I arrived.

Pairing a cigar with a good whisky is one of life’s wonderful celebrations. It’s a Gentleman’s break – a long desired pause for reflection. The meditation aspect, is my number one point – simply because it helps me to calm down and be conscious.

Maybe it’s like becoming one with the cigar. You lose yourself in it; everything fades away: your worries, your problems, your thoughts. They fade into the smoke, and the cigar and you are at peace. – Raul Julia

2. Having A Sophisticated Conversation

What would you describe as a perfect gentleman’s evening? I love to sit down to have a sophisticated conversation. It can be about the beauty of life, literature, art, political affairs, history and so much more. Not the daily superficialities about the weather and god-knows-what. Sadly, we’re often confronted with the shallow topics of today’s society.

That’s my point here, having a whisky and a cigar often leads you into a profound gentleman’s conversation.

3. Appreciation

It takes decades, a lot of passion and pursuit to manufacture a good cigar or a tasty whisky. Can you imagine, it took 20 years to develop the Davidoff Yamasa – TWENTY. That’s what you might expect from a watch or a high class car. Another example is the Balvenie Tun – the marrying process takes 42 casks to come together to create a unique expression.

What I’m trying to explain here: Pairing a cigar with a whisky demands appreciation. It asks you, to sit down and respect the years  of work and perspiration that has been investigated until you’re able to enjoy it.

Whiskey, like a beautiful woman, demands appreciation. You gaze first, then it’s time to drink. – Haruki Murakami

davidoff churchill4. The Harmony Of Flavours

The human being has more than 10.000 taste buds – I can’t imagine that nature created them to enjoy soft-drinks. This topic though, is really a never ending story. We could be taking hours about what different flavours you can feel when pairing cigars and whisky. Vanilla, chocolate, orange, wood… it’s a never ending list of symphonious tastes.

But let me tell you a little secret or let’s say insider tip: use your nose.

Reasons why the nose is so important

You can try this out pretty easy! Close your nose and eat something. You will realise it tastes like nothing. The most important fact to taste flavours is your nose. So when you smoke or you’re enjoying a whisky – taste & breathe through your nose. You’ll figure out what unbelievable amount of flavours such a pairing can mean.

5. It’s just the ideal pairing

I’ve tried to pair pretty much everything to a cigar. And whisky is definitely the best chose. But let me give you a couple of recommendations (this is my humble opinion and does not have to reflect others)

  • Combines Well With A Cigar
  • Whisky
  • Cognac
  • Tee
  • Rum
  • Doesn’t combine very well with a cigar
  • Soft-drinks
  • Vodka
  • Gin
  • Tequila

Review Of The New Camacho Barrel Aged

About The Camacho Brand

Camacho‘s brand slogan says it all. ‘Live Loud’ is what sort of feeling you get with those cigars. Suddenly you see yourself driving in a convertible Mustang amongst the coast with a Camacho Cigar in your hand.

camacho logoIt’s pretty much all about the rock n’ roll feeling in life. And honestly which man doesn’t love the rock n’ roll feeling? Driving big muscle cars, motorbiking across the USA, living life as it comes? Absolutely my life has been much about adventure and that’s one of the reasons I love this brand so much. It’s a boundless feeling and an experience of freedom.

Camacho American Barrel Aged

Camacho Cigars was founded in 1961 by Simon Camacho and acquired by the Eiroa family in 1995.
They brand based in Danlí, Honduras and specializes in authentic handmade Cuban seed cigars.

The Camacho Barrel Aged

A couple of months ago, the Camacho Barrel Aged has been announced and I’ve been desperately waiting for it to arrive in Switzerland. Meanwhile, the Cigar is available in pretty much every lounge and cigar shop.

But what makes the Barrel Aged so special?

The Camacho Barrel Aged is almost entirely made from American tobacco

The cigar consists three sort of tobaccos, two of them are American – the ‘Connecticut Broadleaf’ and a ‘Pennsylvania Broadleaf’ are combined with a tobacco from Honduras.

The main magic though, is the Honduras leaf has been aged for 6 years plus 5 months in a Bourbon Barrel. That’s unique on the market and defintely worth trying.

Of course, I was pretty excited to see if you can actually feel the Bourbon Barrel -massive yes, you can! The Barrel Aged meanwhile belongs to my favourite cigars – always a big pleasure to smoke it.

The following formats are available: Robusto (50×5), Toro (50×6) and Gordo (60×6).

Camacho Barrel Aged Taste

Super fiery and passionate experience. Nothing for sissies! A full-body cigar with an intense and roast flavour. The barrel definitely shows it’s character and turns the whole smoking event into a totally exciting experience.

Else, the cigar comes up with an impressive array of flavours…
The construction and draw are excellent, and I was immediately amazed with notes of charred wood,
vanilla, leather, and some spice. As the cigar progresses, I was struck by flavours of fruit and sweetness
entering the mix with some notes of caramel. The Barrel Aged burned beautifully with an effortless draw

Pairing with The Balvenie TUN 1509

Absolutely no question – the best pairing from my perspective is a good, old and solid whisky. The Balvenie TUN 1509 belongs to the most extraordinary and tasteful whiskeys I have tasted so far.

Camacho Pairing

To create the first batch of Tun 1509, Balvenie has carefully hand selected 42 of the finest casks – 35 traditional American oak barrels and seven European oak sherry butts – from the distillery’s precious aged stocks. All were transferred to Tun 1509, which sits in Warehouse 24, for several months before bottling. This is a rare interpretation of the marrying process and allows all 42 casks to come together to create a unique expression of The Balvenie that’s greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

Balvenie TUN 1509 Flavours

Deep and rich on the nose, with floral notes, sweet vanilla and orange peel. Velvety smooth to taste with tangy citrus, mellow cinnamon spice and blossom honey.

A Gentleman’s Closing Words

Camacho is a great and crazy brand, I love the adventurous brand strategy. The new Camacho Barrel Aged is a unique and intense experience – an absolute must for every gentleman!

The Kameha Grand Zürich is definitely one of my favourite Hotels in Zürich and comes up with an amazing smoker’s lounge. Of course there is a huge variety of drinks to order at the bar.

Now that we made such amazing shots, I have decided to combine them with a few Gentleman’s quotes I absolutely love.

All You Need To Know About Whisky – Interview With An Expert

Pictures and rights by
“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.”
Mark Twain
I clearly remember when I’ve tried my first whiskey, my grandfather served a beautiful dinner and after this yummy dish he asked me to try my first gentleman’s whiskey – an emotional lifetime memory. A few years later I’m still a whiskey lover and I kept collecting bottles over the years. Sad but true, most of it is already gone – but life is simply too short to wait for a good drink. My passion for whiskey was my motivation to organise an interview with the expert Christoph Nyfeler (Art Cigar & Whiskyworld)

We met in his cigar lounge to talk about the topic. Clearly a relaxed and smooth atmosphere, thanks as well Christian for the great shots!

Bourbon tasting

Can you explain us the roots of Whiskey?

Well if we go very far back, it was during the 5th century, when a French monch called Patrick brought the art of distilling from France to Ireland.
Ireland comes up with a different type of agronomy which is the reason that rather corn is growing than fruits. The monchs then brought it to Scottland. The first official documentations date back to the 15th century, the Scot immigrants brought the knowledge of distilling whiskey to America during the 17th / 18th century.

Smoking Cigar
What was the role of Jack Daniels?

Jack Daniels was responsible for the big american trend of bourbon. From a small backyard distillery, he has raised the probably biggest whiskey brand in history. He was the one enhanced the american whiskey production and famousness. If he wouldn’t have been there, we would speak about a different approach today.

Gentleman Jack Test

Can you explain the difference between Bourbon, Whiskey, Single Malt?

Whiskey is the umbrella term for a distillate that is produced of grain. It requires a minimum age of 3 years in oak barrel. The bourbon casks are burnt and roasted which is the reason that bourbon whiskey dominates with caramel or chocolate tastes – those tastes are extracted from the barrel’s wood. A wonderful example is the Gentleman Jack, it contains exactly those flavours. Roasting of the casks is a typical american production method. Additionally bourbon is made of minimum 51% corn. The name is originated in the old bourbon county where Kenntucky & Virgina is.

Single Malt is the rather delicate choice, the production doesn’t require additional roasting.

Scotch Whisky is always from Scotland.
Gentlemans Jack Review
Talking about grain, what types are used for a whiskey?

4 types of grains are used: corn, rye, wheat & barley
There are whiskeys from America, Scotland, Ireland & Japan. Can you explain the differences?

The art of distillery is based on the scotch method. At the end of the day the production method is the same. Currently there is a trend for Japanese whisky.

The American bourbon though is a bit different. As the scot immigrants came to the states, the country produced rather gin and rum. Loads of grain is growing in the north of the US, might be one of the reasons for the typical local method of producing whiskey. It is also a difference what type of water the brand is using to produce their whiskey. In Scotland nature provides springs, in the US they usually have to work with filteret water. Jack Daniels though, has an own spring called “Cave Spring”.

Interview Whiskey Expert

Tell us something about the correct way to drink & degust a whiskey
Whiskey contains more alcohol than wine which can influence your tasting experience. That’s why your nose shouldn’t be too deep in the glass.
A common mistake is to drink it too fast. Take it easy, and keep the whiskey in your moulth to gain the full experience. If you taste a bourbon you can use a bigger glass, whilst Single Malt smaller glasses are preferred
Gentleman’s question, are you allowed to drink a whiskey on ice?
Rather not. Whiskey should be consumed straight to feel the flavour.
Avo Cigars Whisky

How can I combine a whiskey?

Cigar is of course a perfect match. On the other hand, you can cook with whiskey. Fits perfect to a lamb rack marinade.
Another option is to combine it with cheese, a proper modern way.
Traditionally whiskey can be consumed with a dessert, preferably pure chocolate (more than 70% cacao content)

Is mixing whiskey allowed? If yes, how?
Yes it is. You can add water for example. Other options are coffee (Irish Coffee, Whisketto) or you simply mix a gentleman’s cocktail like a Manhattan.

Last but not least… Why the spelling differences (whisky, whiskey)

The differences are as following:

Whisky
Scottland, Canada & Japan

Whiskey
USA & Ireland
There were more Irish immigrants in the U.S.- that’s the reason why the spelling is the Irish way.

Gentleman Jack – The Order Of A Gentleman

We all know this moment. It’s Saturday night and you’re going to a fancy bar and you feel like ordering something different. A drink still classy, not too girly. A gentleman’s choice.

I personally like the classy ambiance of sitting in a dark bar, drinking my Gentleman Jack and Smoking a cigar. It’s just priceless to sit and have one of those long nights discussing about god and the universe.

Davidoff Schiff – An Evening To Remember

davidoff logo

After a sunny day in Zürich, full of glance and with a totally clear sky, I was on the way to the Davidoff event. The Davidoff Schiff floats over the lake since 2007. It’s a good chance to have a ride with a breath-taking view, enjoying Davidoff Cigars and delicious food.

During the early evening hours, the sun was still out on this wonderful spring day.

With a bit of dust over the water, and the violet & orange colours on the sky, it gives this whole event a very special ambiance. The sun was setting on the end of the horizon, and while you float over the water you can clearly feel how utterly perfect nature is.

My favourite, the Davidoff Churchill Commander – Toro

A formidable commander, Winston Churchill brought his imposing personality to bear on the many forces and resources over which he governed. He was a colossus of a character in every sense of the word. Nothing reflects this facet of the man better than the Toro format. Carrying the largest ring gauge in the Winston Churchill range, it is a grand cigar, from the first spicy, leathery, woody notes through the creamy, sweet influences of the Mexican binder to the final triumphant mix of flavours, courtesy of the Nicaraguan filler tobaccos from Esteli and Condegas. This is a cigar which follows in the Great Man’s footsteps and commands your attention.

What more do you need than a beautiful sunset on the Zürichsee, with a cigar? Nothing.
I met very lovely people from the Davidoff team, and I’m truly looking forward to see them again.

And a really dapper cigar lounge Art Cigar

and that’s where we ended up taking pictures for the autumn/fall season.

Fashion Hint

A very classy version of brown jacket & aubergine trousers.
If I’m deciding to chose a colour, I’m not mixing them up to much.

So in the case I keep brown for the jacket, gloves, bag, belt & also the scarf.
Keep the common thread always in your outfit.

In this case you could combine the jacket also with a dark green, black, grey, yellow (be careful with this, go for a dark yellow).

HYT H1 Titanium Bronze

As per Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, time is the 4th dimension.
The harmony of space & time ends up in this masterpiece from HYT.

Extreme alchemists, HYT’s Hydro-Mechanical Watchmakers have turned utopia into reality
– mixing mechanics and liquid within a wristwatch. While truly addicted to non-conformism,
they have drawn upon the strictest codes in Fine Watchmaking – and felt entirely free to
shatter them!

By achieving the incredible challenge of indicating the time with water, they have not so
much propelled a new UFO into the watchmaking stratosphere, as they have in fact pulverized
all certainties by uniting two worlds that are supposedly diametrically opposed.
Never since the water clocks of the pharaohs, have the laws of gravity been overcome to
transpose this energy in a portable watch. HYT has done it.
